Lifelong Learning

Education does not stop once a person graduates from high school or university. We do not stop learning once we “grow up.”  At no point in a person’s life do they cease the learning process. Everyday presents opportunities to further our education, not necessarily formally, but informally. Learning is not confined to a classroom; it exists in daily life.

Metacognition, the thinking about the process of knowing, has led teachers to instruct their students to be more aware of their learning processes. This awareness leads to effective, continuous learning throughout life, long after the student leaves the classroom. Lifelong learning is self-motivated and voluntary. No one can force another to learn against their will.

Lifelong learning can include more than self-directed educational activities. Home schooling, adult education, continuing education, work-based learning, and personal learning environments are all examples of lifelong learning. Of these, personal learning environments are the least formal, allowing the learner to set their own learning goals, select content and level, and communicate with other learners.

The St. George Society for Lifelong Learning encourages people of all ages to continue to advance their education and expand their knowledge through unconventional means.
